Bipolar Disorder and ADD

The symptoms of bipolar disorder and attention deficit disorder (ADD) look very similar. Symptoms of both disorders may include hyperactivity or restlessness, distractability, impulsiveness, poor concentration, and racing thoughts. Both disorders have genetic links. Both can cause sleep disturbances, impaired social functioning, anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and frustration. Both of these disorders can impair daily functioning. In addition, ADHD and bipolar disorder can occur together.

The difference between the two is the main symptoms. In ADD or ADHD, the main symptom is a lack of attention span. In bipolar disorder, the main symptom is a mood disturbance.

ADHD is normally treated with stimulant medications such as Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta. It can also be treated with non-stimulant medications such as Strattera, however these medications are generally not as effective as the stimulants.

Bipolar disorder can be treated with a variety of medications, usually mood stabilizers or antipsychotics.
